Mutual Funds

An investment entity that pools shareholder or unitholder funds and invests in various securities. The units or shares are redeemable by the fund on demand by the investor. The value of the underlying assets of the fund influences the current price of units.


A Registered Education Savings Plan enables a contributor (the subscriber) to accumulate funds on a tax-deferred basis to cover the costs of the beneficiary's post-secondary education.

Segregated Funds

Segregated funds are similar to mutual funds but offered only through life insurance companies. The primary difference is that segregated funds provide a minimum gurantee on maturity and death. Fees may be higher to pay for the guarantee.


The Tax-Free Savings Account is a flexible, registered, general-purpose savings vehicle that allows Canadians aged 18 years and over to set money aside tax-free throughout their lifetime. Each calendar year, you can contribute up to the TFSA dollar limit for the year ($6,000 for 2019) plus any unused TFSA contribution room from the previous year, along with the amount you withdrew the year before. All income earned and withdrawals are tax-free. Plus, a TFSA does not impact fereal benefits and credits.


A Registered Disability Savings Plan helps parents and others save for the long-term financial security of a person who is eligible for the disability tax credit.


A contract that provides income payments at regular (typically monthly) intervals, usually for a specified period or for the lifetime of the annuitant. Income payments may begin right away or be postponed to some future date.



A Registered Retirement Savings Plan is used to save for retirement. RRSP contributions, within certain limits, are tax-deductible, and taxes are deferred within the plan until the money is withdrawn.




A Registered Retirement Income Fund is a maturity option available to RRSP assets, to provide a stream of income at retirement.




A Locked-In Retirement Account, also known as a Locked-In RRSP in some provinces, is created when the assets of a person's Registered Pension Plan are transferred to a Retirement Savings Plan. The investments are "locked-in" until age 55 in most jurisdictions, at which time they may be converted to a Life Income Fund or Life Annuity.


An investment that offers a guranteed rate of return over a fixed period of time.


A Life Income Fund is a maturity option available for LIRA and Locked-In RRSP assets, to provide a stream of income at retirement.

Subject to any applicable death benefit guarantee, any part of the premium or other amount that is allocated to a segregated fund, is invested at the risk of the polcy owner and may increase or decrease in value according to the fluctuations in the market value of the assets of the segregated fund.
